Selected as one of "The Year's 10 Best Intranets" by the Nielsen Norman Group in 2006, IBM’s intranet, known as w3 On Demand Workplace, is attributed with annual operational savings at $2B. Of equal importance is the role that the On Demand Workplace serves to continue to build a culture of collaboration across IBM (cross-function, division and geo) supporting the company’s goal of creating a culture of innovation to become a globally integrated enterprise. The On Demand Workplace is helping IBM move beyond "tools" and get to culture.
According to the Nielsen Norman Group study, the world’s largest information technology company provides its 329,000 employees's with a single, useful intranet by using personalization to ensure the right information reaches the right people. IBM's designers take an aggressive yet realistic approach, creating and enforcing meticulous intranet design standards to maintain a consistent design.
What does the IBM w3 On Demand Workplace include?
- Content management and information architecture (IA) that are holistic, that organises the company without regard to geo or division or brand.
- Instantaneous contact among people without regard to organisation, rank, profession or physical location.
- Common set of tools, applications and processes that are integrated end-to-end and that work automatically and ad hoc with one another.
- System that makes possible virtual team formation and marshalling of resources from around the world - all on demand.

| Testimonials |
- "I came away with information on working tools that I can discuss with others in my workplace. The range of options was particularly interesting. The building of trust that Liam referenced goes two-ways. I can see us introducing some of the "safer" elements, easing our executive into this arena, building their level of trust as well. Although its work environment is very different than ours, IBM is a well established company they can relate to."
- "Good overview of what IBM was doing and why they were doing it. History and goals of the intranet development were expressed well."
